Landscaping in Bloomfield Hills, MI: A wooded lot, kept on purpose.

Seen from the road, a Bloomfield Hills yard of an acre or two reads all at once, which is why HD Landscape plans the lawn, beds and tree line as one, then plants and looks after the lot around its trees, its slope and the city's rules.

The lay of the land

The yard here gets seen from a long way off.

Bloomfield Hills is a small city, about five square miles, and most of it is single family homes on lots the zoning keeps large. Front setbacks in the standard districts run from 40 to 65 feet, so a house often sits well back from the road and the whole front yard reads at once. The lawn, the beds and the tree line have to look like one plan.

Rolling hills and dense woodland drew the estate builders after the farms and orchards, and the woods never really left. Cranbrook's campus covers more than 300 acres of hills, woods and gardens, and many yards here work with the same shade, slope and old trees at a smaller scale. The homes set a high standard for architecture and landscaping. People notice.

  • Trees the city watches

The city says every tree removal gets reviewed by its building department before work starts. We lay out beds and grading around the trees you have, and we flag early if one in the way means a call to the city.

  • Deer at the woods edge

There are too many deer here and not enough predators, and the landscapes pay for it. We choose plants with that in mind and tell you honestly which ones will still need protecting.

  • Rolling ground, wet pockets

These hills make stormwater tricky, and wetlands turn up throughout the city. Most drainage courses sit on private land and are the owner's to look after, so a plan here should settle the water first.

  • Soil that changes across a lot

The rises here are mostly well drained sandy loam, and some low spots are muck that stays wet. One property can hold both, and the plant list has to follow.

  • Homes from every decade

The 2000 census put more than half the homes before 1970, and the master plan expected teardowns and rebuilds to keep going. A 60 year old foundation planting and a bare new lot need very different plans.

In Bloomfield Hills

On a large Bloomfield Hills lot, distance is the hard part.

Side yards are wide by zoning, so getting in is rarely the problem. The long haul from the drive to the back of the lot is. We plan where materials land so the crew is not crossing your lawn all day, loads should stay out from under the trees that are staying, and we leave the drive clean.

Jake starts on foot with you, and here that can be a real walk. He will say what he would do now and what can wait, then write it all up in an itemized estimate, line by line. Some people do the whole plan at once. Others start with what they see from the front door.

Questions

What people ask about Bloomfield Hills yards.

If yours is not here, call or text (586) 718-8762.

Do you work in Bloomfield Hills, MI?

Yes. HD Landscape, a landscaper based in St. Clair Shores, works in Bloomfield Hills on landscape design, renovations, hedge trimming, monthly maintenance, pressure washing and stump grinding, along with our other services.

Is Bloomfield Hills the same as Bloomfield Township?

No. The City of Bloomfield Hills is its own city of about five square miles, and Bloomfield Township surrounds it on most sides. Some township addresses also say Bloomfield Hills on the mail, so your tax bill is the surest way to tell. It matters because the two have different tree rules.

Does Bloomfield Hills require a permit to take down a tree?

Start with the city before any cutting. It says every tree removal needs a plan review by its building department, and a permit is required for regulated trees unless an exemption applies. Those rules can change, so the department's answer is the one that counts. We take down smaller trees, and a tree company handles the big ones.

What plants do deer leave alone?

No plant is fully deer proof, and Bloomfield Hills has the deer to prove it. Yew and arborvitae are winter favorites. Hellebores, alliums, catmint and ostrich fern tend to get passed up. We build plant lists around that and tell you what will still get chewed.

Who looks after the creek or ditch that crosses my yard in Bloomfield Hills?

Usually you do. The city's master plan says only a few watercourses are under the county drain commissioner, and most drainage courses sit on private property as the adjacent owner's responsibility. Near one, a 25 foot natural features setback can apply, so call the city before digging or filling along it. We can walk it with you and talk through what the water is doing.
