Retaining walls in Birmingham, MI: A wall that knows where the water goes.

A Birmingham wall has more to answer to than gravity. It has to hold the grade, keep water off the neighbor, stay out of old tree roots and look like it belongs on the block. HD Landscape builds block walls and raised bed borders that do.

Walls in Birmingham

A wall here answers to the neighbor, the river and the roots.

The Main Branch of the Rouge runs through the western part of the city, and one planning district is even called The Ravines, so grade is a real question on some lots. On others the need is smaller: a low wall that levels a bed or holds a bank back from a drive. Either way, the same questions come up.

  • Water cannot land on the neighbor

The zoning code says drainage has to avoid sending water onto an adjacent lot where it could do damage. A wall changes where water goes, so the high and low points and the downspouts need reading before a block gets set. A narrow side yard leaves little room for error.

  • Near the river, ask first

The city restricts fill and changes to the ground in the floodplain, and the floodway is stricter still. If your lot backs up to the Rouge or Quarton Lake, start with the City Engineer, who sets the exact limits. A wall there may need an engineer's sign off, or may not be allowed.

  • Most roots sit in the top 18 inches

The city's tree manual says most of a tree's roots often grow in the top 18 inches of soil, and they can run well past the branches. A wall footing can cut right through them. The manual also bars grade changes in a public tree's root protection zone, generally the dripline, so near a street tree the wall moves or the city gets asked first.

  • Old stone can often stay

Birmingham's historic guidelines name stone walls and designed grades as features to keep and repair. An old wall on your lot deserves a fair look at repair ahead of any talk about replacing it. In a local historic district, that choice involves the city.

What you get

Most of a good wall ends up out of sight.

A low block wall or raised bed border should include all of this. Your estimate is itemized, so you can go through it line by line.

  • Layout

Line set, grade checked and buried lines marked before digging.

  • Trench and base

Trench cut and checked, gravel packed down and the first row set level.

  • Block and cap

Rows stacked with staggered joints and finished with clean caps.

  • Drainage and backfill

Gravel behind the block, with soil packed in as the wall rises.

  • Finish

Bed filled with plants, mulch or stone, and the lawn edge left clean.

  • Taller or loaded walls

Many cities require an engineer's design over 4 feet, and a wall holding up a driveway or steep bank can need one too.

In Birmingham

Slope and drainage first, then the block.

The walk through comes first. Jake reads the slope, the drainage and what the wall has to hold, then tells you plainly what he would build. If a job needs more than a landscape wall, he will say so and point you toward an engineer.

Settle permits before the plan is final. The city's permit list names fences and impervious surfaces but not retaining walls, so a call to the Building Department tells you what your wall needs. That is a short call, and a far better one to make before the block arrives.

A wall usually comes with other work, like yard grading, new plants or sod. We can do it as one job, so the wall looks like part of the yard and not something added later.

  • Jake and his team were awesome! I had my yard completely gutted, leveled, new sod, pea gravel behind the garage and new plants. I was impressed with how clean they left the job and how efficient they were. What would’ve taken me a week was done in one day. …

Questions

What people ask about retaining wall in Birmingham.

If yours is not here, call or text (586) 718-8762.

Do you build retaining walls in Birmingham?

Yes. HD Landscape builds block retaining walls and raised bed borders in Birmingham, MI, the kind that hold a grade and finish a bed. Each one has to work with the drainage, the tree roots and the neighbor's lot, so Jake looks at all three first.

Does a retaining wall need a permit in Birmingham, MI?

Ask the city's Building Department before work starts. Its permit list does not name retaining walls, and we will not guess at a height. A low bed border and a tall wall holding real soil are very different things, and work near the floodplain, the right of way or a historic district brings in more rules. We would rather you hear it from the city.

Can a retaining wall fix a water problem?

Not by itself. A wall holds soil, and water still has to go somewhere. If water is the real problem, yard grading is the place to start. In Birmingham the fix also cannot push that water onto the next lot.

Can you build a wall near a big tree?

Sometimes, if it stays out of the main roots. We would rather shift the wall than cut big roots, and soil should not get piled against the trunk. If the tree is a Birmingham street tree, the city has to approve any root work.

How tall of a retaining wall do you build?

The right height comes down to the soil, the load and what sits above it, so we do not put one number on it. If your slope needs a taller or engineered wall, Jake will say so at the walk through.
