Cleanups in Birmingham

A Birmingham fall cleanup starts with the street you live on.

Curbed streets get street-side leaf pickup by zone. Uncurbed streets use bags or bins on trash day. Get it wrong and you can end up with a pile nobody will take, or a citation and a bill from the city.

  • Curbed streets run on zones

Leaves go in the street, tight to the curb, the weekend before your zone's window. Rake them out after your last date and the city can cite you and bill for the collection. The map is new each year, usually with two zones split at Maple Road, so the pickup weeks need checking at booking.

  • Uncurbed streets use bags or bins

Leaves go out in brown paper yard waste bags or a rigid can with the city's decal, curbside by 7 a.m. on trash day. Plastic bags get left behind. Under a big canopy, that adds up to a lot of bags.

  • Leaves cannot change streets

It is a city violation to move leaves across a curbed street, or from an uncurbed street onto a curbed one. That sounds obvious until the neighbor's curb starts to look tempting.

  • The season has a hard stop

City yard waste collection ends on the third Friday in December and does not return until the first full week of April. Until then, residents can take up to 10 paper bags to SOCRRA in Troy. Trees do not read the calendar, so a late drop needs a plan.

What you get

A one-time job that clears what the season left.

Book it for spring, fall or both, with no plan to sign up for. Here is the work it covers, and your itemized estimate shows what is planned for your yard.

  • Beds cleared

Leaves, sticks and last season's stems out of the beds and corners.

  • Weeds pulled

Out of the beds so they do not drop seed.

  • Perennials cut back

Spent stems and ornamental grasses cut back at the right time of year.

  • Shrubs tidied

Dead or broken wood out and stray growth cleaned up. Heavy pruning is planned separately.

  • Yard left clean

Bed lines cleaned up, walks and drive left clear.

How the debris leaves goes on your estimate. Fresh mulch and hedge trimming can be added to it. We do not do lawn aeration or sprinklers, and a big tree that has to come down is a job for a tree company.

Try it

A fall cleanup, minus the rake.

Drag across the lawn to clear it. Ours takes a little longer, but this is the result.

In Birmingham

Fall is about timing. Spring is about what winter left.

Fall gets booked around your zone and around your trees. Honeylocust and Norway maple are the two most common trees in the city's inventory, near 17% and 12%. Honeylocust leaflets are small enough to slip down into shrubs and beds, so a pass over the top will not find them. Those beds need a real clearing.

Spring is a different job. It clears what winter left in the beds, tidies the shrubs and gets the yard ready for mulch. Evergreens with winter damage get cut back to live wood once new growth shows where that is.

How the debris leaves goes on your estimate, because it turns on your street and the date. The city says its weekly curbside yard waste pickup is not for landscaping company material, so do not plan a big cleanup around it. The walks, the drive and the beds are clean when we go.

  • Jake and his crew were very professional. They did a great job cleaning out the beds in front of our house. Over grown plants and weed which is getting too hard for this senior couple. We highly recommend!

Questions

What people ask about spring or fall cleanup in Birmingham.

If yours is not here, call or text (586) 718-8762.

Do you do yard cleanups in Birmingham?

Yes. HD Landscape does spring and fall yard cleanups in Birmingham, MI, on curbed and uncurbed streets alike. Beds get cleared, shrubs get tidied, and the visit is timed around your leaf zone or your trash day.

When is leaf pickup in Birmingham, MI?

It runs by zone on curbed streets, and the city posts a map each year. It usually has two zones, split at Maple Road, with pickup weeks through October and November that end the week of Thanksgiving. Leaves go into the street next to the curb the weekend before your zone's window. The city's leaf collection page has this year's dates, or ask us when you book.

Can I put leaves in plastic bags in Birmingham?

No. The city does not collect leaves in plastic bags. Use 30 gallon brown paper yard waste bags, or a rigid can with the city's yard waste decal.

When should I book a fall cleanup?

Aim for a visit shortly before one of your zone's later pickup weeks, so most leaves are down and a pickup is still ahead. If your trees drop late, a second pass can make sense. Call early in the fall, because every yard in Birmingham is on the same clock.

What does a spring cleanup include?

We clear leaves and debris from the beds, tidy the shrubs and clean up the edges so the yard looks finished. It is also the right moment to add mulch and to look at anything that did not make it through the winter. In Birmingham, curbside yard waste does not restart until the first full week of April, so bags set out in March will just sit. Monthly maintenance can pick up from there.
