Landscape renovation in Grosse Pointe, MI: Decades of planting, finally sorted out.
Eighty years of good intentions can pile up in a Grosse Pointe yard, and HD Landscape sorts them out: what no longer earns its place comes out, the grade gets corrected, and new plants, stone and sod go in around a home that deserves the trouble.

- Grade corrected

Renovation in the City
What a renovation usually finds in an old Grosse Pointe yard.
Better than half the housing in Grosse Pointe predates 1939. Over all those years somebody added a shrub, somebody else added a bed, and the trees overhead came and went. A good renovation is part demolition and part editing.
Shrubs that swallowed the windows
MSU Extension notes that people underestimate how big a shrub gets, and old foundation plantings prove it. We take out what has outgrown the house, roots and all, then replant with room to mature.
Grades that crept up
Years of added soil and mulch can leave a bed sitting high against the foundation. On poorly drained clay that keeps water where you least want it, so the bed has to come back down and slope away from the house.
Big trees come first
By MSU Extension's numbers, most of a tree's roots live in the top two feet of soil. Those roots should never get buried just to level a yard. The tree usually matters more than the bed.
Lots on the water
The city's master plan says most lakeshore properties here sit at least partly in FEMA flood Zone AE, and that the shoreline floodplain has been rising. Ask the city before any change to the grade near the shore. We work behind the seawall, not on it.

What you get
A renovation is several jobs, done in the right order.
A landscape renovation usually includes these, and each piece gets itemized on your estimate.
- Tear out
Old beds, overgrown shrubs and weeds out, with the debris covered on your estimate.
- Grade
Ground shaped so water runs away from the house.
- Build
New bed lines, edging, walls or stone, as the plan calls for.
- Plant
New trees, shrubs and perennials set at the right depth.
- Finish
Sod and mulch down, site cleaned, and a follow-up call from Jake.
Big trees are a job for a tree company, and sprinkler systems are not part of our work. For anything else, ask Jake.

The garage is out back, so we plan the route first.
With the garage behind the house, the drive is often the only way to the back of the yard. How soil, stone and plants get there gets settled ahead of time, and you will hear if a car needs to move. Some jobs finish in a day, and bigger ones take longer.
Commercial landscape debris is a private haul under the city's refuse rules, so it does not belong on your weekly pickup. How the debris leaves goes on your estimate, and the walks and the drive get cleaned before the crew goes home.
Renovation work runs through all five Pointes: the Park, the City, the Farms, the Woods and the Shores. The rules quoted here are the City's, so if you live in another Pointe, ask about yours.

Jake and his team were awesome! I had my yard completely gutted, leveled, new sod, pea gravel behind the garage and new plants. I was impressed with how clean they left the job and how efficient they were. What would’ve taken me a week was done in one day. …

This young man and his crew were nothing less than amazing. They just completed a big project for us.... his team of young men were so polite, professional, easy to get along with... They did a great job on our yard and flower beds. The owner gave us some great advice before they started, and we listened to him.. and we are so glad we did. …

Questions
What people ask about landscape renovation in Grosse Pointe.
If yours is not here, call or text (586) 718-8762.
Do you do landscape renovation in Grosse Pointe?
Yes. HD Landscape renovates yards in Grosse Pointe, MI, one of the places we work most. It usually means old beds out, the grade corrected, then new plants, stone and sod. You can do the front, the back or all of it, and each piece gets its own line on the estimate.
Should I keep my old shrubs or start over?
Some old shrubs are worth saving, and some have been past help for years. In yards this old you usually get both. Jake will walk through them with you and say which is which, and if a good trim will bring one back, he will say that instead of selling you a new plant.
Does a landscape renovation in Grosse Pointe need a permit?
Parts of one can. A new fence, or a wall holding more than 24 inches of grade, needs a building permit under the city's zoning code. Lakefront grading and any historic review are also worth asking about. The city has the final word, and its rules can change.
Can you redo just the front yard?
Yes. On a narrow lot the front yard is often where the money shows, so it is a fair place to start. We can plan the back for later so the two match when you are ready.
