Trees in the City

Trees here come with a history and a few rules.

The city still talks about its American elms, which met over the streets like a cathedral ceiling. Disease took those, and a borer took the ash planted after them. The city formed an Urban Forestry Commission in 2017 to rebuild the canopy, so the healthy trees left in your yard matter to the whole block.

  • Oaks run on a calendar

The state says not to prune oaks between April 15 and July 15, and the city forester's notice says to trim them in winter. Fresh cuts in the growing season can invite oak wilt. So oak work waits for the cold months. Ask early, and Jake will tell you whether he can get to it or who can.

  • Street trees are the city's

The tree lawn, the strip along the street, is city property, and the city manages those trees. We do not prune or remove them. If one worries you, the city's Public Services department is the right call.

  • Old ash and elm

The city says even its remaining elms and ashes are likely to die in the coming years. If one stands in your yard, have it looked at before it becomes a hazard. A smaller one is something we can take down.

  • Think about what goes back

After losing so many elms and ash, the city now pushes for a wider variety of trees and publishes a recommended list. When something comes out, we can plant a replacement that suits the spot.

What you get

Clean cuts, lifted limbs and a yard you can walk.

Our own crew does the pruning and the smaller removals. That covers the work below.

  • Pruning

Dead, broken and rubbing branches out, with clean cuts and no stubs.

  • Clearance

Low limbs lifted off roofs, walks and drives.

  • Smaller removals

Smaller trees cut down and the site cleaned up.

  • Stump grinding

Stump ground below grade if you want the spot back.

Oaks have their own calendar in Michigan, so ask about timing early.

Our crew or a tree company: Jake tells you on the first look.

Jake looks at the tree with you and tells you straight whether it is a job for our crew. We handle pruning and smaller removals, and if yours is more than that, you will hear it on that first visit.

Grosse Pointe expects tree trimmings from a hired crew to be hauled privately, so they stay out of your regular pickup. How the debris leaves goes on your estimate. If a stump is left, stump grinding finishes the job, and the ground is yours to replant.

Tree trimming runs across all five Pointes, and the rules on street trees are not the same in the Park, the City, the Farms, the Woods and the Shores.

  • HD Landscape did an outstanding job. They trimmed bushes, planted new shrubs, put down mulch, cut down a tree, grinded down the tree stump and had a company repair fence for me. They were so nice and did everything I asked. They showed up on time and gave me itemized costs beforehand.

  • This young man and his crew were nothing less than amazing. They just completed a big project for us.... his team of young men were so polite, professional, easy to get along with... They did a great job on our yard and flower beds. The owner gave us some great advice before they started, and we listened to him.. and we are so glad we did. …

Questions

What people ask about tree trimming in Grosse Pointe.

If yours is not here, call or text (586) 718-8762.

Do you do tree trimming and removal in Grosse Pointe?

Yes. HD Landscape prunes trees and takes down smaller ones on private property in Grosse Pointe, MI. If yours is too large for us, Jake will say so on the first visit. Trees on the strip along the street belong to the city.

When can I prune an oak tree in Grosse Pointe?

Winter is the safe time. The State of Michigan says not to prune oaks between April 15 and July 15, and the city forester says not to trim them in the growing season. Oak wilt spreads to fresh cuts, and red oaks can die within weeks. Ask Jake early, and he will say whether he can get to it or who can.

Who do I call about the tree in front of my house?

If it stands on the strip along the street, call the city's Public Services department. That tree is on city property, and the city manages it. If it is on your side of the walk, call us at (586) 718-8762.

What should I do about an old ash tree?

Decide if you want to keep it. The city's own FAQ says you only have to treat an ash if you want to keep it, and that you keep treating it for as long as you want the tree. Treating trees is a job for a tree care company. If a smaller ash is past saving, we can take it down.
