Cleanups in the City

What Grosse Pointe's pickup does, and what it leaves to you.

The city runs curbside leaf pickup every fall, usually from mid-October into early December. That covers the piles set out by the curb on your collection day. It does not reach the leaves packed into your beds and corners.

  • Leaves that never reach the curb

Wind and big canopies pack leaves against foundations, under shrubs and into corners. Left there, they mat down over the winter. A fall cleanup gets them out of the planted part of the yard, where a rake rarely reaches.

  • What the city asks of a hired crew

The city's leaf flyer says contractors must not put leaves in the street before your scheduled day, and tells you to pass that day along to your leaf contractor. Its refuse page puts commercial landscape debris on private removal. So tell Jake your collection day when you book.

  • Spring on wet clay

Much of the city sits on poorly drained soil that stays soft after the snow goes. Walking on wet soil compacts it, so a soaked yard is better left a few days. Beds get done right, and your lawn does not pay for it.

  • Lawn leaves can stay

MSU Extension says leaves can be mulched into the grass with a mower, as long as they are no more than 3 to 4 inches deep. Heavier drops under a big maple are another story, and that is what a cleanup is for.

What you get

A one-time job that clears what the season left.

Book it for spring, fall or both, with no plan to sign up for. Here is the work it covers, and your itemized estimate shows what is planned for your yard.

  • Beds cleared

Leaves, sticks and last season's stems out of the beds and corners.

  • Weeds pulled

Out of the beds so they do not drop seed.

  • Perennials cut back

Spent stems and ornamental grasses cut back at the right time of year.

  • Shrubs tidied

Dead or broken wood out and stray growth cleaned up. Heavy pruning is planned separately.

  • Yard left clean

Bed lines cleaned up, walks and drive left clear.

How the debris leaves goes on your estimate. Fresh mulch and hedge trimming can be added to it. We do not do lawn aeration or sprinklers, and a big tree that has to come down is a job for a tree company.

Try it

A fall cleanup, minus the rake.

Drag across the lawn to clear it. Ours takes a little longer, but this is the result.

We time the visit to your trees.

Tell us when your trees usually finish dropping, and we will time the fall visit to that. Big old trees often run late. Spring visits work best once the ground has firmed up.

We clear the beds, pull the weeds, cut back what should be cut and tidy the shrubs. Heavy pruning is planned separately. How the debris leaves goes on your estimate, and when the crew goes, the bed lines are clean and the walks and drive are clear.

We do cleanups across all five Pointes, and each one sets its own leaf dates and contractor rules: the Farms, the Woods, the Shores, the City and the Park.

  • Jake and his crew were very professional. They did a great job cleaning out the beds in front of our house. Over grown plants and weed which is getting too hard for this senior couple. We highly recommend!

Questions

What people ask about spring or fall cleanup in Grosse Pointe.

If yours is not here, call or text (586) 718-8762.

Do you do spring and fall cleanups in Grosse Pointe?

Yes. HD Landscape does spring and fall cleanups in Grosse Pointe, MI, one of the places we work most. The beds and corners get cleared, the weeds pulled and the shrubs tidied, and the fall visit gets timed to your trees.

When does Grosse Pointe pick up leaves?

The city's fall leaf pickup usually runs from mid-October into early December, and dates change from year to year, so look up the current schedule. Piles go next to the curb after 4 p.m. the day before your pickup, with cars off the street on collection day. Leaves left after the last day have to be bagged and stored until yard waste pickup resumes in spring.

Can your crew leave the leaves at the curb for the city?

Only on the city's terms. Its leaf flyer says contractors must not put leaves in the street before your scheduled collection day, and its refuse page treats commercial landscape debris as a private haul. Jake will go over where the leaves end up when he writes the estimate.

When should I book a fall cleanup?

Book early in the fall and we will time it to your trees. Old maples and oaks often hold on longer than you expect, and a cleanup done too soon means a second round of raking. Most people want it done after the bulk of the leaves are down.

Can you clean up a yard that has been let go for years?

Yes, and it is usually satisfying work. If the beds are overgrown past a normal cleanup, Jake will say so and may suggest removing what has taken over. The estimate will show exactly what is planned.
